Thank You Drake, Cult Series ‘Euphoria’ Has Been Renewed For A Third Season (2024)

Euphoria season three has been a long time coming. Season two wrapped back in February 2022, meaning more than two years has passed and the next season is yet to start filming. Of course, a lot has happened between then and now.

Firstly, the careers of the Euphoria cast have taken off. Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer have all grown into some of Hollywood’s biggest and most in-demand stars.

Then, there was the catastrophe that was 2023’s The Idol. Written by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, the show drew a lot of criticism for hyper-sexualisation, with many drawing lines between problems on The Idol to rumours plaguing Euphoria.

Finally, the most significant and tragic development between the second and third seasons of Euphoria was the real-life passing of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco.

With all that, plus writer’s strikes and actor’s strikes, some have wondered whether the series would return at all.

While HBO execs have confirmed it will indeed come back, they’ve said it’s unlikely to return before 2025—at best.

Strengthening this theory, new reports circulating Twitter have suggested that the third season won’t take place in a high school. We suppose it makes sense—by the time the characters finally grace our screens, they’ll have well and truly aged out of the halls of East Highland High School. However, exactly where the storyline will pick up remains to be seen.

As for exactly which actors will reprise their roles in season three, reports are mixed.

According to gossip site, Deux Moi, Jacob Elordi is set to have a diminished role in season 3 of Euphoria.

“Someone message me today and said ‘May’, it’s on for May,” Deux Moi said of the show’s filming schedule. “Jacob Elordi, they heard, will not have as big of a role in the new season.”

Given Elordi’s schedule — he’s currently working on four upcoming productions on top of Euphoria — this rings true.

With many unanswered questions and wild fan theories, season two was left on a cliffhanger that only the third season can fix.

Given the gap, we’re clinging to everything we know about the third season so far to tide us over. So, blast the Labyrinth soundtrack, grab your glitter eyeshadow and keep scrolling to find out what we know.

What Is The ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Release Date?

HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi told Deadline that production on season three had been held-up, partly due to Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s work on The Idol. Combined with writers’ strikes, Orsi said Euphoria is unlikely to return to screens until 2025—at best.

Euphoria is one of those that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on ‘Idol’ but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” Orsi said. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show—ideally in 2025—will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down and just finishing posts on Idol.”

While fans are growing tired of waiting, dedicated audience members will remember the two-and-a-half-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2. So, what’s a few extra months, right?

A return to production was original believe to begin at the end of 2023, however, currently thought production will start at the end of 2023.

However, with Writer’s Guild of America strikes and various commitments of the show’s creator (Sam Levinson) and stars, HBO executives are now saying season three is most likely to return in 2025.

Here’s hoping that the show will bless us with a few special episodes to make it through.

‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Cast: Who Will Return (And Who Won’t)

A complete cast list is yet to be announced, but a handful of key characters aren’t expected to return.

Who Isn’t Returning For Euphoria S3:

Barbie Ferreira (Kat)

In a post to Instagram stories on August 25, 2023, Ferreira shared an illustration of her Euphoria character, Kat, drawn by co-star Hunter Schafer, with a caption announcing her decision to leave the series.

“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye,” she wrote.

“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez.”

Despite speculation Barbie was leaving due to clashes with writer/director Sam Levinson, the actress has confirmed this is not the case.

Javon Walton (Ashtray)

SPOILERS!

As we know, Fezco’s unofficial brother, Ashtray (Javon Walton) may have met his demise at the end of season 2. While the scene occurred off camera, Ashtray’s death was implied. Therefore, it’s not expected for the actor to return for season 3.

Angus Cloud (Fezco)

Actor Angus Cloud passed away at the age of 25 in July, 2023. The cast was shocked by the tragedy, with many paying tribute the actor on social media.

There is no news on how the series will approach Cloud’s passing in the narrative of the show.

Cloud’s character, Fezco or ‘Fez’, played an enhanced role in the second series, with his plotline culminating in the most exciting and heartbreaking twist in the finale.

While Fez was faced with the death of his ‘adopted’ brother Ashtray, and had a subsequent brush with the law, he was also growing his relationship with Lexie Howard, played by Maude Apatow. The blossoming romance was one of the more tender and unproblematic of the series, and fans were excited to see where the two would lead.

Who Is Returning For Euphoria S3:

As we haven’t heard otherwise, it’s expected the key cast will return. This includes:

  • Zendaya (Rue)
  • Hunter Schafer (Jules)
  • Jacob Elordi (Nate)
  • Maude Apatow (Lexi)
  • Alexa Demie (Maddy)
  • Sydney Sweeney (Cassie)
  • Storm Reid (Gia)

However, according to Deux Moi, Elordi (aka Nate Jacobs) will have a diminished role in the latest series.

Sydney Sweeney and Storm Reid have both reposted HBO’s Euphoria announcements on their respective social media accounts, so we’re hoping this means that they’ll also be coming back for more.

There’s no word on whether newcomers Dominic Fike and Chloe Cherry will be returning.

As for the plot of season 3, Levinson told ELLE US that he sees season 3 as a “film noir.” He teased that, through the eyes of Rue, he will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

What Happened At The End Of ‘Euphoria’ Season 2? A Recap

In case you need to brush up on season 2 before the third season hits screens, here’s where we left off…

Needless to say: SPOILERS AHEAD!

As we now know, Ashtray will not be reappearing for season three, as he was gunned down by police in a brutal shootout scene. Fez was taken away in handcuffs while still battling gun wound injuries, missing Lexi’s play.

In the very final scene, Rue reveals she managed to stay clean for the rest of the school year, so we’re hoping to see her continue her sobriety. Meanwhile, Rue’s relationship with Jules was left undetermined, and we’re wondering if they’ll find a way back to each other.

Maddy and Cassie had a spectacularly major blowout during Lexi’s play. While Maddy definitely unleashed some of her anger, we don’t know if these two will become friends again anytime soon.
