Summary
- Minecraft's The End biome is a challenging, barren world with limited resources.
- It's accessed during the Ender Dragon fight and can be chosen as a single-biome world setting.
- There are only a handful of ways for players to beat a survival file in The End.
The well-loved sandbox title Minecraft has kept things new and exciting for players through its subsequent updates, bringing new biomes, mobs, and blocks to the game on a regular basis. The most recent update, Tricky Trials, was one of the few recently added to the game that didn't include a new biome as part of the changelog.
Reddit user duck_of_the_heavens made a shocking discovery while playing around with the game's world creation settings. Hidden among some of the more common biomes players gallivant around, there's a biome labeled "The End" — and it's easily one of the creepiest in the game. "There are no structures except for the obsidian towers, no grass on the grass blocks, no ore, there is lava in the caves, no trees and only ender men spawn," they commented. "I even tried to find end cities with the locate command but none were present."
The image duck_of_the_heavens included showedonly a circle of obsidian pillars, most with monster spawners on top, surrounded by water and little patches of land. For the most part, this world is barren and empty - which is probably exactly how Mojang intended it to be. But this unsettling world has a key role in Minecraft's lore.

How To Survive In The End In Minecraft
The only creatures that spawn in The End biome are Endermen, the Ender Dragon, and shulkers. Similarly, there are only a handful of blocks that spawn in this biome, leaving players virtually unable to make tools or find food as they would in all other biomes. It's one of the game's least-visited biomes - and for good reason.
In a traditional playthrough, The End is accessed when players are ready to fight the Ender Dragon, which is technically the final boss of the game. There's typically a handful of requirements players must meet before The End can be accessed, and usually, once the dragon is defeated, they'll leave the biome behind in favor of the more hospitable areas of a map. But despite being a particularly unnerving place, players can still choose it as their only biome when creating a new world.
As there are no trees, ore strains, animal spawns, or consumable items available in The End, it's nearly impossible to succeed in a survival save file (though that likely won't stop at least one Minecraft YouTuber from trying). Obsidian, one of the only blocks to spawn in this biome, requires a diamond pickaxe to harvest, making it impossible for players to utilize any of it they find in the world. Really, one of the only resources players can collect is dirt, which does little to help them in a survival quest.
Minecraft players who dare to brave this unsettling biome will want to look for End Cities, which have loot and tools that can be used to help them survive the harsh climate. The catch? These are only found in the outer islands of The End, making them particularly difficult to come across. For those really looking for a challenge, attempting to tackle a survival file using only The End as the biome is sure to require a lot of thinking outside-the-block (pun intended).
